Steffan Davies’s book German Exile Literature in the Age of Nations: from the 1790s to the 1950s, published in April 2026, opens a new view of the interconnection of exile writing across time. It studies writing in and about exile in German from the French Revolution to the 1950s, arguing at exile is a defining component of modern German literature. Across its range, it establishes connections between authors which are now the object of fuller investigation in the ‘Interexile’ project.

‘[This] study makes a significant contribution by offering a new way of thinking about literary history, challenging us to re-examine familiar texts and periods, and to question ideas of nation, language and belonging, all of which emerge as less stable than they might first appear’, writes Monja Stahlberger in the Times Literary Supplement (24 July 2026). Stahlberger identifies a ‘conversation’ in the book between authors across its timespan. ‘InterExile’ is now looking for more.

Neues Buch von Steffan Davies

Steffan Davies’ im April 2026 erschienenes Buch German Exile Literature in the Age of Nations: from the 1790s to the 1950s eröffnet eine neue Perspektive auf zeitübergreifende Verflechtungen der Exilliteratur.

Monja Stahlberger rezensiert das Buch im Times Literary Supplement (24.7.2026): „[This] study makes a significant contribution by offering a new way of thinking about literary history, challenging us to re-examine familiar texts and periods, and to question ideas of nation, language and belonging, all of which emerge as less stable than they might first appear.“ Stahlberger identifiziert in dem Buch einen „Dialog“ zwischen Exilautor:innen über dessen gesamte Zeitspanne hinweg. „Interexile“sucht nun weiter nach diesen Dialogen.
